He tilts his head, studying me like I’m a puzzle he’s already solved. “Need’s a weak motivator. Passion’s better.”

I step forward, closing the gap he’s trying to widen. “I’ve got both. Your daughters deserve someone who’ll fight for them, not just clock in.”

My words hang there, fierce, because I mean them; more than he’ll ever know.

“Fight for them?” He quirks a brow, voice dry. “They’re not victims.”

“No, they’re kids,” I retort, undeterred. “They need someone who will prioritize their well-being and have their back.”

His jaw tightens, his gaze intense—amusement or irritation, I can’t tell.

“And that would be me.” He states somewhat riled.

“I’m not questioning your devotion to them. I’m simply assuming this position exists because your attention and time is often divided.”

He leans close, tone laden with sarcasm, “And you believe what you offer is that commitment and sage presence we’ve all been searching for?”

I smirk back, matching his fire. “Sage presence, I don’t know about that. I’m just a hard-working, loyal person with integrity and the desire to prove I’m more than qualified.”

He contemplates my response. His stare drilling into me. He’s smug, sure, but there’s something else...
